So many of us fall into the victim roll especially when we have put our heart and soul into preparing an event or report etc. only to find that some male’s ego has taken off and you sit there whilst he takes all the credit for what you have done.
We read all about women in leadership roles and think “Hell I do all that and still end up a victim. So what does she do differently to me”.
Really powerful women in leadership have the ability to take all emotion out of the issues/projects/outcomes and do not become “attached to the outcome”. Once we become attached to the outcome we immediately become emotionally involved in whatever we are doing.
Because women bring a different perspective to leadership in that we do things from a two pronged approach by including the heart as well as the head when making decisions we need to be careful to keep our emotions at bay and be very aware that there will always be a male ego who is ready to grab what we have done and run with it.
One of the important things I have learnt along the way is that women in leadership need to let everyone know they are in charge from the onset and put a process in place that ensures we get the recognition we deserve.
Recently I spent several months ensuring that an International Convention was a roaring success only to find that several males walked in at the last minute and took all the credit.
Not only did I find myself emotionally drained but a victim and so annoyed with myself for allowing this to happen with all the experience I had. And to make it worse if I had said anything I would have been seen to be looking for limelight or sour grapes.
It was a great lesson on just how powerful the male ego is and just how empowered we must be as women to succeed.
I have read many articles on women in leadership roles and I quote from one “A woman in leadership today believes strongly in herself. She knows she can accomplish anything she sets her mind to. If the environment she's in is not letting her flourish, this she knows it's time to move on to a more supportive environment”
If we find ourselves in this situation then it is essential to look for a mentor who will help us to take that move to a more supportive environment.
We should not forget that a percentage of women in leadership start in these roles following a University Degree. There are many amongst us who have worked their way up the ladder so to speak and this is where one is most likely to find the male ego really at work. I have found that at this level you will also find the women who do not want to see other women succeed as they may be a threat to them. The female ego at work is no different to the male ego. So don’t take for granted that every woman in leadership is prepared to help others.
My experience at this level is to find a women’s networking group that is supportive of all its members succeeding.
Also remember there are some wonderful men out there who when you find them will be a wonderful mentor.
Take a look at several of the women in leadership you admire and read about them, who they are, what they do and how they reached their goal.
