Hi Eric, I have to say it was a pleasure to listen to your work, Shadow of the Crimson Queen. Within the first minute, I was entranced by the story and swept into it by the narrator’s voice. I listened to it with headphones on and my eyes closed, and with the descriptive details you used, the scenes began playing out with such bright clarity in my mind as if watching a movie. Using all five of Yaran’s senses to express his experiences, from the scent of roses to the sensual touch of the Crimson Queen to the visuals of the carnival, made the experience of the story itself that much more realistic. I simply can’t praise your attention to detail enough. Yaran himself has the marks of an intriguing character, a man who is offered all he could ever wish for only to find it more of a curse than blessing, and it’ll be interesting to see what his ultimate outcome will be since I’m assuming the work isn’t finished yet, or at least, not all published as only part 1 was available. Jamison was an instantly likeable character, very charismatic, and a good catalyst against the darker Yaran. He was one I wondered about toward the end, what happened to him on the evening Yaran met Bazulbax, (please forgive if I’ve misspelled her name) and hope to see him return later as the story progresses. With Angeline, I would’ve liked to have seen more of her before hearing the tale of her demise, though she was still a heartbreaking character. The legend of the Corinthians told by Yaran that introduced Bazulbax was great in adding more layers of depth to the story by creating a rich history for the people of that world and of the Crimson Queen herself. It reminded me of tales in classical mythology, which made it feel familiar and unique at the same time. I downloaded the best quality version of it, and thought it sounded very good. The sound effects of rain, chirping birds, crackling fire, all did wonderful to add to the ambiance of the scenes taking place. At times, I thought the narrator’s voice had a bit too much echo, but that’s a minor complaint. Overall, I thought it was wonderful. The biggest challenge with writing fantasy is making the world believable, and you certainly did that with this work. Again, excellent use of details and bringing the story to life. I’ll look forward to hopefully more installments of it. Best Regards, Shannon Frost
